2016 Sasquatch Music Festival – Concert Conflicts

With the 2016 Sasquatch! Music Festival approaching this weekend, Editor Kevin Vanstone is here to break down the worst concert conflicts that will force attendees to split their time wisely between four festival stages.

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats vs. Ty Segall & The Muggers

The first full day of the 2016 Sasquatch! Music Festival is where scheduling can get tricky for fans of the electric guitar like myself. In the battle of The Frontment & Band Members indie-rock heavyweight Ty Segall takes on relative newcomer Nathaniel Rateliff, who has burst onto the scene with the catchy and radio-ready ‘S.O.B.’

Now as much as Rateliff and The Night Sweats seem to do a wonderful impression of Edward Sharpe & The MAgnetic Zeroes, I feel that the latter group of guitar-slinging villains are more worthy of your time. Ty Segall himself has been one of the most prolific rock musicians of this decade, and his new gang of musicians have created another raucuous rock release with Emotional Mugger. Go see Segall.

Shamir vs. Alabama Shakes

Sunday’s most critical concert conflict is a difficult one, as it pits a rising star against the now well-established Alabama Shakes. While I find it incredibly difficult to recommend anyone skip out on a performance by Brittany Howard and the Alabama Shakes, Shamir’s styling of modern dance music is infectious and fun, perfect for a festival setting. Let the mood guide you here, there’s no bad decision.

Grimes vs. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard

Just as Sunday forced festival-goers to pledge their allegiance to either the guitar or the dance hall (as much as Shamir is talented with both) so too does Monday as parties to choose between the electronic production of Grimes and the psyhed-out rock King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are capable of cranking out. Like Sunday, both artists are expected to put on solid shows featuring material from their latest albums, both of which have been well-received. Partiers should go see Grimes, but the freaks will flock to King Gizzard, and for good reason.

Florence & The Machine vs. Caribou vs. Jamie XX

The final night at the Sasquatch! Music Festival promises to be one epic evening, but it also forces festival-goers into some tough choices when it comes to the evening’s entertainment. Florence & The Machine will close down the Sasquatch main stage for the weekend while a pair of producers will battle it out to end the event, with Caribou closing the El Chupacabra dance tent and Jamie XX closing the entire festival from the Bigfoot stage. While Florence & The Machine will be a sight to see in front of the dramatic backdrop of The Gorge, I must recommended closing the weekend at either Caribou or Jamie XX, depending on where you’d rather dance.
